🌀 Loss and Damage Fund: A Breakthrough on a Longstanding Dispute
A major breakthrough occurred on the first day of COP28 when the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Germany pledged $100 million each to establish a new fund to assist developing countries in coping with the impacts of climate change, particularly loss and damage. This irreversible harm, caused by climate change’s effects such as sea level rise and extreme weather events, has been a contentious topic for years. The new fund represents a significant step towards addressing this urgent need.
🌱 Agriculture, Food, and Climate Action Declaration: Fostering Sustainable Food Systems
In a concerted effort to address the intersection of agriculture, food security, and climate change, 134 world leaders signed the Agriculture, Food, and Climate Action Declaration on the second day of COP28. The declaration outlines a series of commitments to reduce emissions from agriculture, support the development of climate-resilient food systems, and minimize food waste. These commitments underscore the recognition of agriculture’s role in both climate change mitigation and adaptation.
⚡ Global Energy Transition Statement: Accelerating the Shift to Low-Carbon Energy
Recognizing the urgency of a rapid and just transition to a low-carbon energy system, 67 countries, including major emitters like the United States, China, and India, issued a joint Global Energy Transition Statement during COP28. The statement emphasizes the need for phasing out fossil fuel subsidies, accelerating the deployment of renewable energy sources, and enhancing energy efficiency measures. This collective commitment signals a growing global consensus on the energy sector’s future direction.
