The tool called the Energy and Industry Geography Lab, is a valuable resource for policymakers and stakeholders working on Europe’s energy transition. It provides over 100 maps of energy infrastructure, renewable energy potential, emissions of air pollutants, and socio-economic data.
A key feature of the tool is its ability to identify potential areas for accelerated permitting of renewable energy projects. These areas are particularly suitable for development because they are not expected to have significant environmental effects. The tool can also be used to exclude protected areas from these renewable acceleration areas.
The Commission has committed to integrating more relevant data into the tool in the coming months, such as wetlands, seabed habitats, bird routes, and the distribution of sensitive species. This will further enhance the tool’s ability to support sustainable and environmentally friendly renewable energy development in the EU.
